Spot and Choose: A new radical rule that could turn NFL OT into true Sudden Death

Updated: Mar 18, 2021

“I think everybody wants a chance for guys to do what they do, I don’t really see the downside of having that.” Chiefs general manager Brett Veach on NFL overtime rules

The Baltimore Ravens proposed to the NFL a new rule that could change overtime forever. The rule states, One team picks the spot of the ball to start overtime, and the other team chooses whether to play offense or defense.

If the one team picks, for example, the offense’s own 20 yard line, the opponent would then choose whether to play offense from their own 20 or to play defense, with the other team having the ball on its own 20. The upside of this rule is that it would minimize the large impact the coin toss has on the game. By having both teams pick an advantageous factor to the deciding phase of the game it balances the NFL's overtime and gives both teams a greater chance to win.

In my opinion, this is a rule that could have great but more exiting effects on the end result of the game. Giving both teams a fair chance to win brings more tension and competition. I would say this rule should be tried during the pre-season. I'm intrigued by this idea and would support it. I think most NFL players and fans would agree with me that the OT is unbalanced and it needs to be changed. This idea bring something new and exiting to look forward too. Now its all up to Roger Goodell and the NFL.
